By Zoila Palma: At the 113th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Minister of Labour, Florencio Marin Jr., outlined the country’s progress and priorities in advancing decent work and social justice.
Addressing delegates from 187 ILO member states, Minister Marin described Belize’s recent economic and labour achievements as part of a broader commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.
“This year’s conference convenes at a critical moment,” Marin said, “as inequality, informality, climate vulnerability, and rapid digitalization continue to shape the world of work.” He emphasized that labour is not a commodity and called for a united push toward social justice and democratic values.
Marin highlighted key national achievements: a record low unemployment rate of 2.1%, a 52% increase in the minimum wage, and a drop in informal employment to 35.6%. He also noted the launch of Belize’s Decent Work Country Programme 2024–2029, developed through tripartite collaboration.
“With support from partners like the IDB and Taiwan ICDF, we’re launching new programmes to strengthen skills for youth, women, and migrants,” he said, referring to Belize’s new digital job-matching platform and labour force participation initiative.
The minister also announced the completion of Belize’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill, marking a milestone in making OSH a fundamental labour right.
Closing his address, Marin reaffirmed Belize’s commitment to global labour standards: “Decent work must be more than an aspiration. It must be lived, legislated, and localized.”
