By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A major security scare unfolded near the White House after a gunman opened fire on a U.S. Secret Service checkpoint, leading to a deadly exchange of gunfire with officers.
Officials say the incident happened Saturday evening near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Secret Service officers reportedly returned fire after the suspect began shooting toward a security booth.
The suspect was later identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, who reportedly died at a hospital after being shot by officers. A bystander was also injured during the incident.
President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House at the time but was not harmed. Following the shooting, portions of the White House complex were temporarily locked down while security teams responded.
Investigators say the suspect was previously known to both the Secret Service and Washington D.C. police following an earlier incident near the White House in 2025.
