By Horace Palacio: Belizeans woke up this Christmas morning to generally fair weather conditions, as forecasted by the National Meteorological Service of Belize. The country, under the influence of a light east-to-southeast airflow, is expected to enjoy sunny skies with occasional cloudy spells throughout the day.
According to the 6:00 AM forecast from meteorologist Catherine Cumberbatch, the day will maintain mostly sunny conditions. However, residents and visitors should anticipate isolated showers. These showers are expected to be more frequent along the coastal areas.
As the day progresses, the possibility of isolated afternoon thunderstorms developing over the Maya Mountains cannot be disregarded. This adds a slight note of unpredictability to an otherwise calm Christmas weather forecast.
The marine conditions are favorable for those planning to spend their holiday along Belize’s picturesque coastlines. Light easterly to southeasterly winds, blowing at 5 to 15 knots, are expected to produce a light chop over the sea. Wave heights are anticipated to be between 2 to 4 feet, making it conducive for various marine activities.
In terms of temperature, coastal areas are expected to experience highs of around 85 °F (29 °C) and lows of approximately 78 °F (26 °C). Inland areas will be slightly warmer, with highs reaching up to 89 °F (32 °C) and lows around 70 °F (21 °C). The hills of Belize, always cooler, will see temperatures ranging from a high of 74 °F (23 °C) to a low of 66 °F (19 °C).
Looking ahead, the outlook for Tuesday and Tuesday night indicates cloudy intervals with a few brief morning showers. The forecast suggests that these conditions will be followed by inland afternoon thunderstorms, which are then expected to gradually increase at night.
For those planning their Christmas activities around the tides, high tide occurred at 9:43 AM, followed by a low tide at 2:17 PM. Another high tide is expected at 8:34 PM. The sun rose this morning at 6:20 AM and is set to set at 5:25 PM, while the moon, which rose at 4:17 PM today, will set at 6:04 AM tomorrow.
Belize’s Christmas weather, while mostly sunny and fair, carries the usual tropical unpredictability with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms. Residents and visitors alike are advised to enjoy the festivities while being prepared for brief interruptions by Mother Nature.
