By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A $2 million investment in Belizean sport is now officially underway after the Belize Government Lotteries Limited (BGLL) approved a major contribution to the National Sports Council (NSC) to strengthen facilities and support the development of athletic talent across the country.
$1 million delivered on Thursday
On Thursday, February 27, 2026, Narda Garcia, CEO in the Office of the Prime Minister and Chair of BGLL’s Board, and Janel Espat, BGLL’s Managing Director, presented the first $1 million to Sports Minister Anthony Mahler, in the presence of NSC representatives, the Government of Belize Press Office reported. The remaining $1 million will be handed over at the end of March 2026.
The contribution comes from profits generated through “Fi Wi Boledo,” which BGLL channels into social upliftment initiatives nationwide.
“This contribution will assist the National Sports Council in revitalizing sports facilities and nurturing the next generation of Belizean athletic talent,” the GOB Press Office said.

A diverse sporting landscape
Belize’s sporting community spans close to 30 active disciplines, reflecting a wide and growing national interest in sport. These include athletics, basketball, baseball, billiards, bodybuilding, boxing, canoeing, chess, cricket, cycling, darts, fencing, football (including futsal, 5-a-side, 7-a-side, and beach football), golf, horse racing, judo, karate, jiujitsu, kayaking, mixed martial arts, pok‑ta‑pok, rugby, sailing, swimming, table tennis, tae‑kwon‑do, tennis, triathlon, volleyball (including beach volleyball), and weightlifting.
