By Horace Palacio: The twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena in western Belize are being choked by thick smoke from raging forest fires, exacerbating the sweltering heat and leaving residents gasping for relief.
Many residents have reported experiencing respiratory problems and eye irritation due to the smoke, which has settled over the area like a thick blanket.
“It’s making the heat even worse,” one resident said. “We’re just praying for rain to come and clear the air.”
Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the air quality improves.
