Belize Cancer Society joins global fight for stronger tobacco control

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Cancer Society has announced a partnership with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to advance stronger tobacco control measures across the country.

The collaboration will focus on increasing public awareness, engaging communities and young people, and advocating for policies that reduce tobacco use and exposure to tobacco products.

Tobacco use remains a significant public health concern in Belize and is a major risk factor for several types of cancer, as well as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

The Society says preventing tobacco use, particularly among young people, is critical to reducing the burden of cancer and other noncommunicable diseases here.

Youth engagement will be central to the campaign. The Belize Cancer Society will focus on initiatives that empower young people to become advocates for a tobacco free Belize, recognising their influence over peers, families, schools and communities.

The partnership will also support local research to build evidence for tobacco control advocacy.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is the leading advocacy organisation working to reduce tobacco use worldwide.
