By Zoila Palma: In recognition of Men’s Health Awareness Month, the Belize Cancer Society (BCS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Wellness (MOHW), PAHO/WHO, Belize Healthcare Partners, and Belize Bank, hosted a Men’s Forum at the Old Belize Pavilion under the theme “Strong, Smart, and Self-Aware: Empowering Men and Boys for Healthier Futures.”
The event brought together men and boys from across the country to engage in discussions aimed at challenging health stigmas, promoting preventative care, and encouraging early detection.
BCS President Kim Simplis Barrow opened the forum with a passionate call to redefine masculinity in health. She stressed the urgent need to break the silence around men’s health issues that often go undetected due to societal pressure.
Dr. Karen Roberts of PAHO/WHO echoed that message, urging the development of culturally sensitive, gender-responsive policies to address high rates of preventable diseases among Caribbean men.
Keynote speaker Dr. Jorge Hidalgo emphasized a shift from reactive to proactive healthcare, encouraging regular check-ups and mental health conversations.
The forum featured personal stories, including that of childhood cancer survivor Anwar Barrow, who encouraged men to prioritize their health and not delay seeking care. Several panel discussions tackled topics such as andropause, cancer awareness, mental and emotional health, and redefining masculinity.
Experts like Dr. Angie Murray, Dr. Javier Novelo, and Dr. Hugh Sanchez provided practical insights on how men can take control of their health.
Throughout the day, attendees also accessed free health services, including prostate consultations, glucose and blood pressure screenings, and mental health support.
The Belize Cancer Society expressed gratitude to all participants and partners and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting men’s health through education, access, and advocacy.
