By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The World Standards Day 2024 Forum, themed ‘Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Climate Change’, brought together key stakeholders and experts to discuss the critical role of standards in addressing climate change. The forum, organized by the Belize Bureau of Standards at the University of Belize in Belmopan, featured a lineup of distinguished speakers who shared insights on various aspects of energy efficiency and management in Belize.

Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Servulo Baeza, congratulated the Bureau of Standards, which falls under the Ministry of Agriculture, for their work.

“As we celebrate World Standards Day 2024, we take this opportunity to focus on standards for changing the climate,” Baeza said.

“As part of a CARICOM regional initiative, the Bureau of Standards, along with the Ministry of Energy and other key stakeholders, has actively participated in the establishment of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and light bulbs to ensure that best practices are applied throughout CARICOM member states.

“In addition to establishing these essential regional MEPS, Belize was also selected as a pilot country for the implementation of the Energy Efficiency Labeling Scheme (EELS). For Belize, this is the first voluntary scheme that the Bureau is seeking to introduce. Most importantly, it is the first public-private initiative that it is jointly embarking on, and it has far-reaching benefits for Belizean consumers.”

Baeza said the Bureau of Standards has engaged with key importers of air conditioners, refrigerators, and lights and has received positive feedback and support.

“We are committed to maintaining continuous engagements to ensure successful implementation. These engagements will focus on continuous evaluations of appliances by the Belize market and establishing conformance with the standards through a registration program,” Baeza said.

“However, it is important to note that this initiative is not just about compliance with standards. Today’s event also serves to raise awareness on the impact of climate change in Belize and how energy efficiency can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by highlighting how the scheme aligns with products with poor energy performance from being sold in our market while providing accurate information to consumers on energy consumption in order to make informed purchases.”
