The documentary film Children of the Diaspora is directed by Lunes Oña, undergraduate student in Film, Television, and Digital Production at Miami Dade College. His film will be screened, followed by a discussion, on Friday, November 1, 2024, at 7:00pm at Graham Center (GC), Room 150, Florida International University’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, Miami, Florida. This event is free and open to the public. The documentary is in Spanish with English subtitles. The discussion will be in both languages. Description: From Scotland to Ecuador, passing through Canada, Spain, and Angola, twenty-one young Cubans who grew up in nine countries outside the island tell their experiences of adaptation living between two cultures and the survival of the Cuban identity, despite their stories of familial rupture and alienation.
Children of the Diaspora is a documentary that delves into the persistence of Cuban culture in recent generations of the diaspora. Several of the participants have never visited the island or have a vague memory of it. The documentary explores the experience of living between two cultures, the Cuban home and the host country. The interviewees were born or raised in Miami, New Jersey, Canada, Angola, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Spain, among others.
