Belize braces for record-breaking heat wave as Caribbean temperatures surge

By Horace Palacio: The Caribbean, including Belize, is experiencing unseasonably high temperatures with projections indicating a hotter-than-normal trend continuing until October. The Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CariCOF) issued a Heat Outlook warning of intense heat from May to July across the Caribbean Islands and Belize, followed by record-setting heat compounded by rising humidity from June to September.

Public health and environmental concerns rise alongside the temperatures. Vulnerable populations and small livestock face the threat of frequent, intense, and potentially prolonged periods of heat stress. Historically, Belize experiences 5 to 10 heatwave days. This year, projections indicate Belize could face at least 30 such days.

The National Meteorological Service in Belize has already reacted by issuing a Heat Alert on May 10th, predicting temperatures exceeding 97°F. Residents, especially those in inland areas, are strongly advised to stay hydrated and minimize outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. These conditions have prompted heatwave advisories across other Caribbean islands as well.

The Caribbean region is known for its beautiful weather, but climate change appears to be intensifying the heat, impacting the health and well-being of residents, tourists, and the islands’ delicate ecosystems.
