By Horace Palacio: The Belize Assembly for Persons with Diverse Abilities (BAPDA) is celebrating the introduction of electric buses in Belize City as a major stride toward a more inclusive public transportation system. Backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the initiative directly addresses the longstanding challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in accessing reliable and affordable transportation.
BAPDA has been a vocal advocate for PWD rights and accessibility, highlighting the shortcomings of the city’s previous bus fleet, which often left those with mobility challenges stranded. The new e-buses, designed with accessibility in mind, mark a significant shift. Not only are they safer and more environmentally friendly, but they also offer a dignified and affordable way for PWDs to navigate the city.
While BAPDA welcomes this progress, they acknowledge the road to full inclusion is ongoing. Legal challenges and resistance from some quarters threaten to undermine the gains made. However, BAPDA remains resolute in its commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure the e-buses remain operational and the service expands to other districts.
BAPDA’s unwavering advocacy demonstrates that progress is possible when the needs of all citizens are considered. As Belize City embraces a greener and more accessible future, BAPDA stands ready to champion further initiatives that promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for all.
