By Zoila Palma:  Belize has taken another step toward developing its first national Industrial Strategy following a week-long study tour to Japan organized by the Office of the Prime Minister, through the Investment Policy and Compliance Unit (IPCU) in the Ministry of Investment, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The June 29 to July 3 visit provided Belizean policymakers with firsthand exposure to Japan’s approaches to sustainable industrial development and innovation.

During the tour, the delegation explored a wide range of sectors, including the blue economy, biotechnology, seaweed cultivation and processing, aquaculture technologies, biomass utilization, carbon sequestration, environmental technologies, investment promotion, and industrial policy implementation. Officials said the knowledge gained will support Belize’s efforts to develop a modern industrial strategy focused on economic diversification, value-added production, environmental sustainability, and greater international competitiveness.

The Belize delegation included representatives from the Economic Development Council, the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Petroleum and Mining, BELTRAIDE, and the Investment Policy and Compliance Unit. They were accompanied by senior UNIDO officials and met with representatives from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency, Shiga Prefectural Government, Yamaguchi University, the Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, and several innovative Japanese companies.

According to the Ministry of Investment, Belize’s Industrial Strategy with Blue and Green Industrial Policies is designed to strengthen productive sectors, increase exports, create quality jobs, and promote environmentally sustainable industrialization while capitalizing on the country’s blue and green economy advantages. The ministry also expressed its appreciation to the Government of Japan and UNIDO for facilitating the knowledge exchange, noting that the experience will help strengthen Belize’s capacity to implement evidence-based industrial policies that support inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
