By Breaking Belize News Staff: Five Southside youths accused of an armed robbery on the BelChina Bridge remain behind bars after appearing again in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, with bail still not considered at the lower court level.
The accused are Shemaud Nunez, 24; Shemar Zuniga, 19; Edward Saldano, 26; Rudolph Gibson, 22; and Devon Garcia, 20.
The group appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3, where their matter was adjourned once more. During the hearing, the men were provided with additional disclosure consisting of two more pages, a chain-of-custody report, and a DVD. The prosecutor informed the court that one additional report remains outstanding before full disclosure can be completed.
The case was adjourned to Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
Before the adjournment, Edward Saldano and Shemaud Nunez addressed the court, seeking bail consideration. They told the magistrate that at their previous appearance they were informed that bail would be considered after three months on remand had elapsed. Both men pleaded with the court to grant bail, saying they remain incarcerated and have been unable to contact their families.
However, the sitting Senior Magistrate explained that she was not in a position to consider bail, as she is no longer the magistrate assigned to their matter. As a result, all five men were further remanded to the Belize Central Prison until their next court date.
Police say the charges stem from an incident on Monday night, October 6, 2025, when officers responded to a report of an armed robbery on the BelChina Bridge. Investigations led police to intercept a Chevy Equinox believed to have been used in the robbery near Lindo’s Alley shortly after 12:54 a.m.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered a cellphone belonging to the victim. The complainant, 23-year-old Aaron Whyte, told police that he was walking on the BelChina Bridge when a Chevy Equinox approached, and five males exited the vehicle and robbed him of his cellphone at gunpoint.
The accused are due back in court on January 14, 2026, when disclosure and bail considerations are expected to be revisited.
