Artist and educator Edwin M.E. Smith will deliver a curator’s talk, “A Sense of Belonging: Connection & Community in Bermuda Art,” at the Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) on Wednesday, March 6, at 6:00pm, preceded by a reception at 5:30pm ($20 for members, $30 for non-members).

Description (Bermuda National Gallery): Join BNG guest curator Dr Edwin M.E. Smith for a Curator’s Talk at BNG on Wednesday, March 6, as he discusses the works in A Sense of Belonging: Connection and Community in Bermuda Art.

A Sense of Belonging, which opened in December 2023, brings together works by artists of Bermudian heritage, drawn from both the Bermuda National Gallery’s permanent collection and community loans, which collectively tell a story of connectedness. Featuring pieces by Robert Bassett, Bill Ming, Charles Lloyd Tucker, Sharon Muhammad, and many more, the exhibition captures the pulsing energy of island life: from the drum-beating power of the gombey circle, to the intimate moments between families and neighbors.

Dr Edwin M. E. Smith is a Bermudian artist and art educator. His mixed-media artwork and illustrations, which respond to critical social issues, can be found in collections internationally. He is also a seven-time Bermuda Biennial artist. As the author of Imagemaking and the Bermudian Artist he offers a celebratory perspective on Bermuda’s vibrant visual art. Dr Smith holds an MAT from Andrews University, an MFA from Savannah College of Art & Design and a PhD in Fine Arts from Texas Tech University. Since 1998, He has taught in the Art & Design Programme at Bermuda College.
