By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): An aspiring People’s United Party councillor candidate for Corozal Town has withdrawn from the race, after a police report alleging threats and assault, allegations he firmly denies.
Tomas Zetina confirmed in a Facebook statement posted on Wednesday that he has withdrawn from the PUP municipal convention, saying he is stepping aside because the matter is now before the courts.
According to a police report, a 28-year-old woman reported that on Sunday night, she, Zetina, and her cousin were returning from Chetumal when Zetina allegedly became aggressive. The report states that while passing the Mexican Immigration Building near the Belize Northern Border, he allegedly threatened the occupants of the vehicle.
The report further alleges that when the woman attempted to calm him down, Zetina grabbed her left forearm, causing pain, before pushing her hand away. The vehicle later stopped at a parking lot in Corozal, where the other passenger exited.
In his Facebook statement, Zetina maintains that he is innocent and says he believes the allegations against him are untrue.
Neither party has commented publicly beyond Zetina’s statement, with the matter pending before the court.
With the municipal elections set for March 2027 and party conventions taking shape across the country, the PUP has not yet commented on the development in Corozal Town. The matter now rests with the court, where the facts will be tested.
