By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Ladyville man received an unexpected birthday gift on Friday when he walked out of the High Court a free man after the Crown discontinued a murder case against him.
John Carlos Quilter, who turned 25, was released after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions entered a nolle prosequi, formally discontinuing proceedings against him for the May 4, 2023 murder of 21-year-old James Kelvin Bainton at the Ladyville Sports Complex.
Quilter appeared unrepresented before Justice Candace Nanton, who explained that the decision did not amount to an acquittal and that prosecutors retained the authority to reinstitute proceedings against him.
Justice Nanton informed Quilter that he was free to leave, provided there were no other matters requiring his detention.
Quilter, who had been on remand since January 9, 2026, emerged from the courtroom smiling and briefly spoke with his mother, who was waiting outside. When approached for comment, he simply shook his head and smiled.
As previously reported by Breaking Belize News, Bainton was fatally shot following an altercation involving several men at the Ladyville Sports Complex on May 4, 2023.
Police alleged that following the confrontation, Bainton was walking toward Seagull Street with his brothers when a man identified as Tyler Smith approached and fired the fatal shot.
Investigators alleged that Quilter had handed Smith the firearm used in the shooting. Smith was subsequently reported to have fled Belize for the United States.
Quilter was charged with murder in January 2026, nearly three years after Bainton’s death, and was committed to stand trial in the High Court in June.
Friday’s decision brings the proceedings against Quilter to an end for now, although the Crown retains the option of bringing the charge again.
