By Zoila Palma: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement expressing concern over delay in redistricting.
“Fair representation is a fundamental democratic principle. I share Mr. Jeremy Enriquez’s concerns about the continued delays in the redistricting exercise. This is a matter that should concern every Belizean.
The disparities he highlights in electoral divisions underscore the need for urgent action. Every Belizean’s vote deserves fair weight, and every community deserves fair representation,” Panton said.
Panton says that all Belizeans have a responsibility to uphold the principles of our democracy.
“It is time for the Commission and the Government of Belize to have an honest, open conversation with the Belizean people about the delays, the proposed constitutional amendments, and a clear timetable for completing the exercise,” Panton added.
The Leader of the Opposition says that these processes must place the rights and interests of the Belizean people at their centre.
“I hold Mr. Jeremy Enriquez in high esteem for his relentless advocacy on behalf of the Belizean people and his steadfast commitment to fair representation. A true champion for the people,” she expressed.
