By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) has begun secondary field trials of the National Student Assessment System (NSAS), an initiative aimed at strengthening student assessment and improving education planning across Belize.
The project is being supported by the Millennium Challenge Account–Belize (MCA-Belize) through the Belize Compact’s Education Project.
The field trials are scheduled to run from November 2 to December 4, 2026, across all six districts.
The initiative is intended to establish a modern, competency-based assessment system that will provide valuable information on student learning and help improve teaching methods, classroom instruction and education planning.
The Ministry explained that the NSAS is designed to support improvements in the education system rather than rank students or schools. It also assured that information collected during the assessments will remain confidential and will be used for education planning and research.
The trials will allow officials to test and refine the system to ensure it aligns with Belize’s curriculum before wider implementation.
Through the initiative, MoECST and MCA-Belize are working to establish a stronger and more responsive education system that better addresses the needs of students and educators.
