By Zoila Palma: Haiti’s National Police say they have found the charred remains of a vehicle used by four Salvadoran aviation technicians who went missing after an attack in gang-controlled territory on October 18.
However, authorities have not found any trace of the four men, who disappeared more than two weeks ago, AP reports.
The discovery was made on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, in the Santo neighborhood of Croix-des-Bouquets, an area controlled by violent gangs. Haitian authorities said an operation early Monday involved Haitian police, Salvadoran troops, and the United Nations-backed gang suppression force.
The attack prompted Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to deploy more than 2,000 troops to Haiti to assist in the search.
As security forces continue operations against armed gangs, gang leader Wilson Joseph, also known as Lanmò Sanjou, has called for dialogue with the United Nations, expressing concern over civilian deaths as fighting intensifies.
Meanwhile, Bukele has vowed to help Haiti confront those supporting and supplying gangs, saying his country’s forces are not enemies of the Haitian people.
