By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Government of Belize is establishing a joint Urban Crime Suppression Unit involving the Belize Police Department, Belize Defence Force and Belize Coast Guard in response to escalating gang violence.

Minister of National Security, Energy and Ports Michel Chebat announced the initiative during Sunday’s emergency police briefing.

The new unit will form part of a broader security response that includes the declaration of a State of Public Emergency in designated areas of Belize City, Ladyville, Cotton Tree and Unitedville.

Chebat said the government is also committing additional resources to the Police Department, including vehicles, standard policing equipment, firearms and ammunition.

He announced that police will increase checkpoints and vehicle inspections throughout the country.

The minister specifically warned that vehicles travelling without proper lighting or licence plates, as well as vehicles with tinted windows, would be subjected to police checks and searches.

Chebat acknowledged that heightened operations may inconvenience law-abiding motorists but urged the public to cooperate.

He emphasized that the additional security measures are intended to disrupt criminal activities and prevent further loss of life.

The minister maintained that restoring security requires a coordinated national effort involving law enforcement, communities and government agencies.
