By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says his government has identified potential savings within the national budget that could be redirected toward measures intended to ease the rising cost of living, with an announcement expected once the details of the proposed initiatives are finalized.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Briceño expressed optimism about discussions held in Cabinet concerning the government’s response to growing financial pressures on Belizean households.
He said he had been working closely with the Financial Secretary and officials within the Ministry of Finance to identify areas where expenditure could be reduced or savings generated.
According to the Prime Minister, those savings could then be used to finance programmes and other interventions aimed at providing direct relief to Belizeans.
Briceño did not specify which areas of government expenditure could be reduced or disclose how much money the proposed savings might generate.
However, he said he had already presented the proposals to Cabinet and expressed confidence that the measures being considered could have a positive impact on citizens.
His comments follow Cabinet’s October 27 discussion of a paper entitled “Addressing the Rising Cost of Living/Affordability”, during which ministers reviewed proposals intended to form the basis of a national Cost of Living Plan.
The government has indicated that the proposed measures will be finalized and brought back to Cabinet for approval.
The latest development also follows Briceño’s acknowledgment last week that Cabinet had not yet held substantive discussions on additional cost-of-living relief measures.
The Prime Minister declined to provide details of the specific interventions under consideration, saying the administration was still finalizing the proposals.
He indicated that a formal announcement would be made once that process was completed.
