By Zoila Palma: Haiti has scheduled presidential and legislative elections for July and October 2027, in a move aimed at restoring democratic governance in the crisis-stricken country.
According to AFP, Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council announced on Wednesday that the first round of voting will take place on July 18, 2027, followed by a second round on October 4. Final results are expected to be announced on October 23. The elections would mark the country’s first polls since 2016, as years of political instability and gang violence have disrupted its democratic process.
The elections were originally expected to take place in December this year and February 2027 but were postponed several weeks ago.
Haiti has been without an elected president since Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in 2021, leaving the country struggling with prolonged political uncertainty.
Authorities view the planned elections as a critical step toward restoring stable government and addressing the widespread insecurity affecting the nation.
However, escalating gang violence presents significant challenges to organizing a nationwide vote.
According to the International Organization for Migration, nearly 1.5 million people out of Haiti’s estimated 11 million population have been displaced by violence.
Several municipalities remain under gang control, while road closures and insecurity have restricted access to registration centres and other essential services.
Efforts to restore security are ongoing, with a UN-backed Gang Suppression Force being deployed to support overwhelmed Haitian police.
