By Zoila Palma: El Salvador plans to deploy more than 2,000 soldiers to Haiti to support anti-gang security operations and help rescue missing personnel, Reuters report.
The announcement follows the disappearance of four Salvadoran aircraft technicians who were reportedly ambushed while travelling through a gang-controlled area on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.
El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has already sent hundreds of soldiers to Haiti as part of efforts to locate the missing technicians and address the country’s worsening security crisis.
El Salvador’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Bukele had spoken by telephone with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé about the deployment. Fils-Aimé’s office confirmed the call, stating that both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral coordination and operational cooperation through the United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force. The additional troops are expected to support rescue operations and respond to security challenges, although it remains unclear whether they will join the existing international mission or operate separately.
Meanwhile, Haiti’s electoral council has postponed the country’s planned presidential and legislative elections, further delaying a return to democratic governance.
