By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump has questioned the legitimacy of Brazil’s presidential election, claiming that the vote appeared to be “rigged,” despite President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory over right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro.
Trump made the remarks on Monday while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, describing the election as a “bad look” for the world.
However, he indicated that he had not decided on any response and said his responsibility was to govern the United States, Politico reports.
Trump’s comments echoed allegations made by Bolsonaro, who has refused to concede defeat and called for the results to be annulled.
The losing candidate questioned a decision by a Lula-appointed Supreme Court justice to extend voting by two hours in some circumstances to accommodate transportation delays.
The election has become a point of tension between Washington and Brasília, with Trump previously imposing high tariffs on Brazilian goods in an effort to pressure Brazil’s government over the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Those measures reportedly strengthened Lula’s political standing before relations between the two countries gradually improved. Following Lula’s victory, some allies of Trump have called for tougher action against Brazil, including cutting diplomatic ties, while questions remain over Washington’s formal response to the election outcome.
