By Zoila Palma: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is seeking closer relations with the European Union as Canada works to reduce its economic dependence on the United States.
Carney is expected to host EU leaders this week, with discussions potentially including an unprecedented “associate member” status for Canada as both sides explore stronger cooperation, AFP reports.
Carney’s efforts come amid growing tensions with US President Donald Trump, whose tariffs have affected Canada’s economy and whose threats to annex the country have sparked widespread concern.
In August, Carney ended trade negotiations with the Trump administration, declaring that Canada’s future would not be decided in Washington. He has also questioned whether the United States can be trusted to honour its commitments.
Since taking office last year, Carney has moved to strengthen relationships with countries beyond the United States, including China, India, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
His government is pursuing greater access to international markets, aiming to secure tariff-free access for Canadian businesses to three billion consumers worldwide.
