By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have formally arrested and charged 21-year-old Louis Maxwell Matthews, a Belizean welder of Belize City, with the murder of 17-year-old Kaylon Trevor David, who was gunned down on Iguana Street Extension on Thursday evening.
According to police, David was walking along Iguana Street Extension shortly after 6:30 p.m. on October 8 when he was approached by a gunman who fired several shots in his direction. The teenager was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
During Friday’s police press briefing, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero confirmed that investigators had detained a suspect and were reviewing surveillance footage. Police indicated that the shooting may have stemmed from an ongoing rivalry involving threats exchanged between David and other individuals in the area.
As previously reported by BBN, investigators recovered a 9mm expended shell casing from the scene. Police also confirmed that David was not previously known to law enforcement.
Matthews was formally charged on Saturday, October 10. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
