By Zoila Palma: San Antonio Village in the Cayo District has signed an Action Plan aimed at piloting sustainable community-based tourism in Belize.

The commitment was formalized with the endorsement of local tourism stakeholders, the San Antonio Village Council, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Belize, the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, and the Sustainable Tourism and Inter-American Cooperation (SITCA).

The signing was witnessed by JICA’s Chief Regional Project Advisor for Community-Based Tourism, Mami Sakurai, along with the Ministry’s Chief Tourism Officer and technical team.

The Ministry of Tourism says that the initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration among the community, tourism stakeholders and development partners as San Antonio works toward establishing a more sustainable tourism model.

The plan builds on the village’s renowned eco-museum model, with planning that began in 2025 and development expected to continue through 2028. The initiative will focus on strengthening the village’s tourism offerings while incorporating greater community participation in destination planning and management.

With its rich cultural heritage and reputation for hospitality, San Antonio is being positioned to showcase its tourism services through a more modern destination management approach.
