By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two police officers convicted of wilful oppression for recording and circulating a video of a couple engaged in a sexual act during the COVID-19 pandemic will have to wait a little longer to learn their fate after their sentencing was adjourned again on Thursday.
Police Corporal Jason Shaw and Police Constable Leslie Martinez appeared before High Court Justice Derick Sylvester for sentencing, but the matter could not proceed because reports previously ordered by the court were still outstanding.
Justice Sylvester therefore adjourned the matter to Monday, October 5, 2026.
Shaw and Martinez were unanimously convicted on July 17 by a nine-member jury after less than two hours of deliberation. The five women and four men on the jury found both officers guilty of wilful oppression.
The case stems from an April 5, 2020 incident in which the officers recorded a couple engaged in a sexual act inside an abandoned building in Belize City. Prosecutors said the video was subsequently shared in a police WhatsApp group known as “Loyal Group” before spreading publicly and causing humiliation to the couple.
The July proceedings were a retrial. An earlier trial ended after the jury was unable to reach the required verdict, and the matter was later transferred to Justice Sylvester.
A third police officer, Anthony Villamil, had originally been charged alongside Shaw and Martinez, but prosecutors later withdrew the charge against him and granted him immunity in exchange for his testimony.
Shaw and Martinez remain awaiting sentencing and are due back before the High Court on October 5.
