By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Government of Belize is investigating preliminary reports that a Guatemalan military aircraft entered Belizean airspace without authorization.
In a statement issued Thursday, September 25, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had received initial reports of the unauthorized presence of the aircraft in Belizean airspace.
The Ministry stressed that the information remains preliminary and said it is working with the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security to officially confirm the full details of what occurred.
The Foreign Ministry also issued a firm statement on Belize’s sovereignty.
“Any incursion of a foreign military aircraft into Belize’s airspace would be a violation of Belize’s sovereignty and will be countered appropriately,” the Ministry stated.
No details have yet been released on where the reported incident occurred, how far the aircraft allegedly entered Belizean airspace, how long it remained there or what type of Guatemalan military aircraft was reportedly involved.
The development comes against the backdrop of Belize and Guatemala’s longstanding territorial dispute, which is currently before the International Court of Justice. Belize’s Foreign Ministry has previously described the preservation of the country’s territorial integrity as a central foreign policy priority.
Authorities have indicated that further confirmation is being sought.
