By Zoila Palma: Following reports that on Thursday evening, a Guatemalan Air Force aircraft was tracked flying over Belizean territory and made several passes near Lighthouse Reef Atoll, Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement saying that it is working together with the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security to officially confirm the full details of these reports.
“Any incursion of a foreign military aircraft into Belize’s airspace would be a violation of Belize’s sovereignty and will be countered appropriately,” the Ministry said.
Meanwhile, Guatemala’s Defense Ministry says that the Guatemalan army operations “are conducted with strict adherence to the national and international legal framework.”
