By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating an aggravated burglary in the Bella Vista area of Belize City after three masked men allegedly entered a businessman’s home, assaulted him and stole a safe containing valuable items and documents.
According to police information, officers responded to a residence in the Bella Vista area shortly after 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23.
The 68 year old businessman told police he had been asleep in an upstairs bedroom when his alarm system was triggered at around 3:00 a.m.
He said that while walking through the house to investigate, he encountered three unknown men with their faces concealed. One of the men was allegedly wearing a full face motorcycle helmet.
Police say one of the intruders brandished what appeared to be a black 9mm handgun and struck the businessman on the head.
The men then allegedly forced him back into his bedroom at gunpoint and stole a black metal safe valued at $2,000.
The safe reportedly contained three Italian passports, identification cards, an American driver’s licence, a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Compressor Extreme World wristwatch valued at US$20,000, a Samsung cellphone, an iPhone 17 Pro Max and an iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Police estimated the total value of the stolen items at approximately $45,000 BZD.
Investigators say entry was gained after locks on a burglar bar security door and a glass door on the lower flat were damaged.
Scenes of Crime personnel processed the area and lifted partial fingerprints.
The businessman suffered an abrasion to the right side of his head and was taken to hospital for medical attention.
Police identified a 37 year old man as a person of interest. The matter remains under investigation.
