By Zoila Palma: Today, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the United States and Iran are moving closer to a possible settlement, while a senior Iranian official said Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz to Gulf shipping within days if Washington eases military pressure and lifts its blockade on Iranian ports.
Trump said Iran had been communicating with the United States and that discussions were developing. However, he provided no details on the talks and reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
The Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran had delivered a proposal to Washington through mediators and could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if its demands are met.
Iran has called for Washington to formally commit to resolving the conflict through diplomacy and agree on a timeline, while Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said Tehran would not surrender to US pressure.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern for Gulf countries because it carried about one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments before the conflict.
