By Zoila Palma:  Road protests over rising fuel and basic food prices have intensified across Guatemala’s Petén department, with taxi drivers, truckers and other motorists blocking several major roads and intersections.

The demonstrations, which began on Friday, August 28, have continued into today Tuesday, September 1, disrupting transportation and access at key locations throughout the department.

As of this morning, Guatemalan Journalist Cesar Soler said that roadblocks were reported at multiple locations, including in front of Mundo Maya Airport and the Turicentro intersection in Flores.

A blockade is also affecting the route from San Benito to San Francisco.

Other affected areas include the La Potra intersection in Santa Ana, the road from Flores to Melchor de Mencos, and the entrance to La Libertad.

Motorists have also reported blockades at the intersection leading to Sacpuy in San Andrés and at the El Ceibo–El Naranjo intersection.

The ongoing demonstrations are causing disruptions for commuters, travelers and commercial traffic across Petén as protesters continue to voice concerns over the rising cost of fuel and essential goods.
