By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Two Saudi companies have submitted bids to construct the 150 bed university hospital planned for Belmopan.

Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard says an evaluation committee is scheduled to meet next week to review those bids.

He added that once all due diligence is complete, including from the Office of the Contractor General, groundbreaking should take place by December this year.

Cabinet approved the hospital in April 2023, and a BZ$90 million Saudi loan was signed the following month.

The government subsequently acquired 15 acres of land from Annie Zhu and Kenny Zheng for $6.9 million, after it was decided the facility would no longer be placed on land belonging to the University of Belize.

On December 10, 2024, Cabinet announced that Saudi firm Dar Al Omran International Engineering Consulting Company had received the design contract for $3.27 million.

More than three years have now passed since the loan signing.
