By Zoila Palma:  Union Senator Glenfield Dennison has raised concerns over Belize’s rising cost of living, arguing that economic hardship is placing increasing pressure on working families and contributing to crime.

Dennison called for a comprehensive plan to address poverty, create employment opportunities and make basic necessities more affordable.

“There is no plan to fight the rising cost of living,” Dennison said, stressing the need for practical measures to help Belizeans cope with rising expenses. He argued that people who work hard but cannot make ends meet may eventually become desperate, adding, “A man would really want to work for a fair day’s pay before he decides to go steal, rob and murder.”

Dennison also pointed to the high cost of fuel and its impact on small businesses and workers. “It can’t be three hours of work for one gallon of gas because fuel is what feeds the entire economy,” he said, giving the example of a person operating a weed-eater business who must spend around $15 for a gallon of fuel. He warned that when the cost of business inputs continues to rise, workers struggle to earn enough to support their families.

The senator further called for greater opportunities for Belizeans and questioned government spending and the awarding of contracts. “We have to create opportunities for people out here to mind their kids, take care of their families,” he said.

“Because the plan is to make the wealthy get wealthier,” Dennison said, arguing that Belize needs a proper strategy to tackle poverty and address the economic pressures that he believes are contributing to crime.
