By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Orange Walk District’s run of bicycle thefts has finally produced a courtroom answer, after a town mechanic caught a man sitting on his beach cruiser in his own yard at 1:30 in the morning, held him by the shirt, and kept him there until police arrived.

According to the Belize Police Department, a 24-year-old mechanic of Orange Walk Town reported that on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at about 1:30 a.m., he was inside an old car parked in front of his home, within his yard, when he saw a man sitting on his brown Hurricane brand beach cruiser bicycle, valued at $250, about to ride off with it. The bicycle had been lying on the ground in his unfenced yard, about five feet in front of the vehicle he was sitting in.

The owner moved fast. He ran and grabbed the man by the back of his T-shirt, demanding to know why he was taking his bike. The man replied that he had come to check for a light for someone he named. The owner called police, who arrived shortly after and detained the man.

The complainant told police he has known the man for about two months and recognized him clearly, having been around him for roughly twenty minutes until police arrived, speaking directly with him, under the glow of his veranda light, which shone clearly toward where the bicycle was. He requested court action, and the bicycle was photographed by scenes of crime personnel.

The detained man was identified as Chayanne Mesh, a 28-year-old labourer of Trial Farm Village. He was served the acknowledgement forms, read to him in English, which he stated he understood and signed.

On Monday, August 3, police obtained a warrant in the first instance and formally arrested and charged Mesh with the crime of theft. Cautioned, he chose to remain silent.
