By Zoila Palma: Fast-fashion giant Shein has reported a $99 million loss for the first three months of 2026, a sharp reversal from the $395 million net income recorded during the same period a year earlier.
The company attributed part of the decline to slower US sales following the removal of a tariff exemption on low-value packages, while ongoing uncertainty over US-China trade tensions has also affected its business.
Shein said the elimination of the US “de minimis” exemption, which previously allowed goods valued at $800 or less to enter the country without tariffs, has negatively affected sales and overall revenue growth.
In response to higher duties and taxes, the company said it is considering several measures, including raising prices in the US to offset some of the increased costs, BBC reports.
The company also reported that the conflict involving Iran had weakened demand, raised operating costs and caused delivery delays in some markets. However, the first-quarter loss included a $328 million paper loss linked to an accounting change involving special investor shares, meaning the underlying financial performance was affected by factors beyond direct operating results.
The latest financial disclosure comes as Shein prepares for a potential stock market debut in Hong Kong after receiving approval from China’s securities regulator.
