Belize strengthens marine monitoring and early warning systems

By Zoila Palma:  Belize has strengthened its marine meteorological monitoring and early warning capabilities with the handover of three Marine Monitoring Stations to the National Meteorological Service (NMS) by the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH).

The equipment, valued at more than BZ$66,000, was officially handed over on July 13.

The equipment package includes SOFAR Spotter Buoys, floats, moorings, integrated sensors, anchors, and other accessories designed to continuously monitor wave conditions, sea surface temperature, wind, and atmospheric pressure.

The new stations will provide real-time marine observations to improve weather forecasting and early warning systems for hazardous marine conditions.

The expanded monitoring network will support safer navigation, strengthen coastal management, enhance disaster preparedness, and improve evidence-based decision-making to help protect lives, livelihoods, and Belize’s marine resources.

National Meteorological Service personnel and representatives from other key agencies are also receiving technical training on the installation, operation, and maintenance of the equipment.

The monitoring stations will be deployed at strategic marine locations, with confirmed sites at English Caye and Glover’s Reef, while a third station is expected to be installed within the Southern Turneffe Atoll.

The Ministry of Public Service and Disaster Risk Management and the National Meteorological Service thanked the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, the European Union, the Caribbean Development Bank, and other project partners for supporting the initiative.
