By Zoila Palma: The fatal shooting of a Colombian immigrant by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Biddeford, Maine, has ignited political controversy and prompted the agency to suspend most traffic stops nationwide, CNN reports.
The move comes just days after another fatal ICE shooting involving a Mexican immigrant during a traffic stop in Houston, raising fresh concerns over the agency’s enforcement tactics.
The victim, 26-year-old Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, was a father of a three-year-old daughter and had been living and working in the United States.
According to the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, Durán Guerrero was authorized to work and had been issued a Social Security number. Senator Angus King said he was not the intended target of the immigration operation.
The Department of Homeland Security, however, described him as an undocumented immigrant and said the officer fired after fearing for public safety when Durán Guerrero allegedly attempted to flee in a vehicle.
The incident has intensified debate in Maine’s U.S. Senate race, with Democratic candidates criticizing Republican Senator Susan Collins for voting to fund ICE without requiring policy reforms. Some candidates have called for sweeping changes to the agency, while others have gone further by advocating for its abolition.
