By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A man is facing a drug charge after being stopped and searched by police during a late-night patrol in the Orange Walk District.

According to the Belize Police Department, on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at around 12:15 a.m., officers on mobile patrol along the Philip Goldson Highway had their attention drawn to a man walking toward Carmelita Village who appeared to be acting suspiciously. Police stopped the man and informed him that a search would be conducted, asking if he had anything illegal to declare, to which he reportedly answered no.

During the search, officers said they found a small zip lock bag containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine in his front pants pocket, and a second similar bag inside his wallet. He was informed of the alleged offence, cautioned, advised of his constitutional rights, and placed under arrest.

At the Orange Walk Police Station, the man was identified as 27-year-old Maximiliano Xujur, a Belizean carpenter of Carmelita Village. Police said the suspected drugs were weighed at 0.28 grams, then sealed and labelled as evidence.

Police subsequently swore to an information and complaint and formally charged Xujur with possession of controlled drugs. He was again cautioned and chose to remain silent.
