Samuel Mark Bernardez, 35, of Antelope Street Extension, and Asband Ashton Grant, 35, appeared before Justice Derick Sylvester on Tuesday morning. Both men remain on remand at the Belize Central Prison after their matters were adjourned.
Justice Sylvester informed the men that trial dates for their respective cases will be set on October 1, 2026.
Bernardez is on remand for the alleged rape of a 60-year-old woman on the Southside of Belize City. The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, around 8:50 a.m.
According to reports, the woman told police that her attacker first tried to enter her home through a window and appeared to leave. She said that when she ran outside for help, she encountered the alleged attacker, who dragged her back inside the house and raped her.
Meanwhile, Grant is before the High Court in connection with the death of 67-year-old Griffith McNaughton Cadle, a Belizean-American retired United States Army soldier of Baymen Avenue, Belize City. Cadle was stabbed to death on North Front Street.
Grant was charged with manslaughter in connection with Cadle’s death.
Both men were remanded until their next High Court appearance on October 1, 2026.
