World Cup blamed for cocaine spike in Mexico, experts suggest

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Two major cocaine seizures in Mexico this month have prompted analysts to suggest a surprising possible driver, the World Cup, though officials are pushing back on the theory.

According to a report by Reuters, security forces announced on June 22 that they had seized just over three metric tons of cocaine on the same day in two parts of the country, the western state of Guerrero and the central state of Tlaxcala. It was the seizure in Tlaxcala, a landlocked state not known as a trafficking route and located near Mexico City, that caught the attention of experts.

Six security analysts interviewed by Reuters pointed to the World Cup as a likely reason cocaine would be moving through the area. The tournament, being hosted in part by Mexico, was expected to draw some 5.5 million visitors, and analysts suggested the demand around Mexico City could explain why traffickers would be stockpiling large quantities of the drug nearby.

Andrés Sumano, a security expert at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Tijuana, told Reuters that the expected spike in demand may have led criminal groups to increase their supply in warehouses near the capital. He compared it to how any business prepares for a major event, stocking up to meet anticipated demand.

That view was echoed by others, including researcher Vicente Sánchez, who said a World Cup link seemed the most likely explanation for such a large amount of cocaine being stored in Tlaxcala, given its proximity to Mexico City. Reuters also reported that several drug dealers in Mexico City said they had seen demand rise as a result of the tournament.

Importantly, however, Mexican officials have not endorsed this connection. Officials made no mention of the World Cup when announcing the busts, and the Tlaxcala government firmly rejected any such link. A spokesperson, Antonio Martínez, said the seizure does not constitute evidence that Tlaxcala is a hub for organized crime, nor is there any information connecting it to international events.

For now, the World Cup theory remains just that, a hypothesis put forward by analysts rather than a confirmed finding. What is clear is that the seizures represent a significant haul, and a reminder of the persistent challenge that drug trafficking poses across the region.
