International News: Death toll climbs to 1,450 as Venezuela earthquake rescue efforts continue

By Zoila Palma:  Rescue teams in Venezuela continued a desperate search for survivors today, five days after two powerful earthquakes devastated parts of the country, claiming more than 1,450 lives.

Rescue crews from Venezuela and several other countries worked through the night, racing against time to locate tens of thousands of people still believed to be trapped beneath collapsed buildings, Yahoo reports.

Emergency responders warned that the window for finding survivors is rapidly closing. Simone Walter, emergency relief coordinator with the aid organization Help, said every second is critical for those still buried under rubble, noting that experience from previous earthquakes shows only about 10 percent of missing persons are typically rescued alive after several days.

Rescue efforts have been complicated by continuing aftershocks.

Despite the challenges, several dramatic rescues have offered hope. The leader of a Colombian rescue team said some people found beneath collapsed buildings had escaped injury.

Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, also reported that one man was rescued alive after spending 106 hours trapped under the debris.
