FIFA allows rainbow flags at Egypt v Iran World Cup match

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): FIFA has confirmed that fans will be allowed to bring rainbow flags when Egypt face Iran at the World Cup, setting up a notable clash between local Pride celebrations and the values of two nations where homosexuality is criminalised.

The group stage game is being played in Seattle on a weekend that coincides with the city’s annual Pride festivities, a scheduling coincidence that emerged only after December’s draw paired the two Muslim-majority countries. The city has designated the fixture a “Pride Match.”

In a statement, world football’s governing body said the tournament is an inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds, adding that fans of all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome. FIFA said that rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity are permitted under the World Cup Stadium Code of Conduct, provided they are used in keeping with the code, which limits the size of flags and banners and bars items considered political.

The decision has not been without controversy. Both Egypt and Iran objected after the draw, with the Egyptian Football Association saying such events clashed with its cultural and religious values. Homosexuality is criminalised in both countries, where LGBTQ people can face severe penalties.

FIFA has also sought to distance itself from the Pride label. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said earlier this year that there would be no “Pride Match” at the World Cup, only a World Cup match in Seattle, with separate events organised by outside groups taking place in the city on the same day. Seattle’s local organisers, however, have pressed ahead, describing the occasion as a chance to promote acceptance, and noting that the city’s Pride celebrations have taken place on the weekend for more than 50 years.

For Belize, the story touches on a subject with its own history close to home. In 2016, the Supreme Court of Belize struck down Section 53 of the Criminal Code, a colonial-era law that had criminalised consensual same-sex intimacy, in a landmark case brought by activist Caleb Orozco. The ruling decriminalised consensual same-sex relations between adults, and the government of the day chose not to appeal that core decision. The case was deeply divisive, drawing strong opposition from church groups and many members of the public who viewed it as contrary to the country’s religious and cultural values, while others welcomed it as a matter of human rights and dignity.

That divide remains a feature of Belizean society today. Unlike Egypt and Iran, Belize no longer criminalises same-sex relations, yet it remains a largely religious and socially conservative country where the issue continues to stir strong and differing opinions, and where same-sex marriage is not recognised. As the world watches the debate play out on the World Cup stage, it is a conversation Belizeans are far from unfamiliar with.
