By Zoila Palma: At least 40 people have drowned in heatwave-related incidents in France since last Thursday, according to Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, as extreme temperatures grip much of Europe and reach their peak in several countries, BBC reports.
Authorities warn that rising heat is driving more people into unsafe swimming conditions in rivers and canals, often without understanding the risks involved.
France, along with Spain and Italy, has been among the worst affected. The country recorded its hottest June day on record on Monday, followed by its hottest night ever, with half the country placed under red alert.
Officials have urged the public to avoid unsupervised swimming, after several fatalities, including a 13-year-old girl who drowned in the River Seine and other incidents involving young people and swimmers in difficulty in rivers where swimming is banned.
The heatwave is also intensifying across Spain and Italy, where temperatures are expected to exceed 40C in many areas.
Spain has issued red alerts across multiple regions as forecasters warn of increasingly frequent early-summer heatwaves linked to climate change. In Italy, 15 cities are under red alert conditions, prompting emergency protections for outdoor workers and state support for companies forced to reduce activity due to dangerous heat.
Elsewhere in Europe, heat-related deaths have also been reported in Germany, where authorities recorded multiple fatal swimming incidents over the weekend.
Meteorological agencies across the continent warn that the extreme temperatures will continue to shift across regions, with some areas expected to see further peaks later in the week.
