Tropical Storm Arthur kicks off an active Atlantic hurricane season

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Atlantic hurricane season has produced its first named storm, with Tropical Storm Arthur bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding concerns to parts of the United States Gulf Coast.

Arthur developed in mid-June and made its presence felt across portions of Texas, Louisiana, and neighboring states, becoming the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

Although the storm never reached hurricane strength, it still packed enough force to create hazardous conditions. According to forecasters, Arthur produced sustained winds of about 40 miles per hour, with stronger gusts reported in some coastal communities.

The storm’s biggest threat, however, came from the tremendous amount of rainfall it delivered.

Weather officials warned of life-threatening flash flooding as Arthur pushed large amounts of tropical moisture inland. Some areas were forecast to receive more than a foot of rain, while isolated locations could see totals approaching 20 inches.

Satellite imagery captured by NASA showed the storm spreading thick cloud cover and intense rainfall across the Gulf region as it moved northeastward.

Even as Arthur weakened, forecasters continued monitoring the system because of its potential to produce flooding rains across central Gulf Coast states.

Belize’s hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, with the most active months typically occurring between August and October.

Meteorologists continue to encourage residents throughout the region to review emergency plans and remain prepared as the season progresses.

For now, Belize remains free of any tropical threats, but Arthur’s development highlights how quickly conditions can change once hurricane season begins.
