By Zoila Palma:  DR Congo produced a resilient performance to earn a 1-1 draw against Portugal in their opening World Cup match in Houston today.

Portugal took an early lead in the sixth minute when João Neves headed home from a lofted pass by Pedro Neto. Despite Portugal’s dominance in possession and control of the match, the African side remained competitive and dangerous on the counterattack.

Portugal, led by 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, controlled about 75 percent of possession and created several scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

However, DR Congo stayed organized defensively and found a breakthrough just before halftime when Yoane Wissa scored with a powerful header in added time to level the match at 1-1.

But, Ronaldo missed a golden opportunity in the 69th minute, while a goal by João Cancelo was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Leading up to the last minute, Portugal desperately pressed for a winner.

But, the draw leaves both teams with work to do.
