By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Trinidadian man who was reportedly missing back home has been found safe and sound in Belize. Unfortunately for him, the discovery was made at the Belize Central Prison.
According to police, 47-year-old Rubindra Dale Rampersad was reported missing in Trinidad after concerns arose about his whereabouts. The situation attracted attention in Belize because Rampersad had previously appeared on social media claiming to be involved in a massive US$125 million project.
As it turns out, he wasn’t missing at all.
Police say Rampersad was arrested and charged on May 29 for making off without payment after allegedly staying at a local hotel and failing to settle the bill.
According to officials, the manager of Golden Bay reported that Rampersad had booked a room for what was expected to be about a month. Police say he initially provided a credit card, but after numerous attempts to process payment and communicate with him, the hotel was unable to collect the money owed.
The situation reportedly took a turn when hotel management learned that Rampersad had departed for the airport.
Police were alerted and intercepted him before he could leave the country. He was subsequently charged, taken before the court, and remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
The irony has not been lost on many Belizeans.
The man who reportedly described himself as a procurement specialist connected to a multimillion-dollar project allegedly ran into trouble over a much smaller procurement issue: paying the hotel bill.
While the matter is serious and remains before the court, the unusual circumstances have generated plenty of conversation online.
One thing is now certain. The mystery of the missing Trinidadian has officially been solved.
He wasn’t missing. He was just temporarily unavailable.
