By Zoila Palma: Today, U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States would strike Iran “hard” again following an exchange of military attacks between the two countries overnight.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the U.S. had already hit Iran hard on Tuesday and would continue its military response. He also renewed calls for Iran to sign a deal, while claiming the country had been “completely defeated” militarily, BBC reports.
The latest escalation follows U.S. strikes on Iranian defence systems, radar sites and ground control stations near the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks came after Trump said an Iranian drone struck a U.S. Army Apache helicopter patrolling the strategic waterway. The helicopter’s two crew members survived and were rescued by an American sea drone. Iran, however, has not claimed responsibility for the incident, according to reports from the country’s semi-official Mehr News Agency.
Iran responded by launching strikes on 21 targets at U.S. military bases in the region, including facilities in Bahrain and Jordan. Kuwait also reported intercepting an attack.
The conflict has also disrupted commercial shipping in the Gulf region.
India reported that three Indian sailors were missing and 21 crew members rescued after an attack on the commercial vessel Settebello near Oman.
The U.S. military said it struck the tanker after it allegedly violated a blockade on Iranian oil exports. As fighting continues, diplomatic efforts remain strained.
