By Zoila Palma: Today, Pope Leo XIV made history as the first pope to address Spain’s parliament, delivering a wide-ranging speech that focused on respect for human dignity, the protection of life, migration, peace and social unity.

Speaking before a joint session of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate in Madrid, the pontiff urged lawmakers to reflect on the values guiding their legislative decisions and emphasized that every just society must be built on the recognition of the inherent dignity of every person.

Addressing the issue of abortion and euthanasia, both major topics of debate in Spain, Pope Leo strongly defended the protection of human life. “The defense of human life is neither a partisan issue nor a confessional interest: It is a goal of civilization,” he said. He added that “every human life must be recognized and safeguarded from conception to its natural end,” warning that when societies fail to protect the most vulnerable, including the unborn, the elderly and the sick, they risk losing their moral foundation.

The pope also turned his attention to migration, describing it as one of the most pressing moral and legal challenges facing nations today. He said the plight of migrants and refugees requires a response centered on human dignity and compassion rather than purely economic or demographic considerations. “The affirmation of human dignity cannot remain abstract when so many people are forced to leave everything behind in search of peace, security and a future,” Leo said, while calling for safe and legal migration pathways, protection from traffickers and meaningful opportunities for integration.

In addition, Pope Leo urged leaders to reject polarization and work toward dialogue and peace. He warned that political pluralism should not descend into hostility and called on public officials to use language responsibly.

The pontiff also expressed concern about war, rearmament and the ethical implications of military technologies, including artificial intelligence.
